an officer next in rank to the president, who takes the president's place when necessary. If the President of the United States dies, resigns, or is removed from office, the Vice-President becomes President. The Vice-President of the United States takes part in cabinet meetings at the President's invitation, and is the president of the Senate. Abbr: V.P.
